Elsdon Metcalfe Trophy

The Elsdon Metcalfe trophy competition is open to pairs comprising of people who play in the Bateson League and is a 3 wood, 18 ends competition.

2024

Eight pairs from the club have entered the competition this year - good luck to you all!

UPDATE - Three Bishop Monkton teams made it through to the semi-finals and finals day at Thirsk on 15th August - Di & Derek Massingham, Pete Darbyshire & Dave Chapman and Rex & Susie Whistler. Both Di & Derek and Pete & Dave lost their semi-final games but Rex and Susie made it through to the final where they beat Ian Brickley and John Russell from Harrogate. They were presented with their trophy by Malcolm Hartley, Bateson League Chairman.

2023

A clean sweep for the club this year with Susie & Rex Whistler being runners-up and Pete Darbyshire & Dave Chapman becoming champions again.

Pete and Dave beat Judith and Derek Chappel (Harrogate) in one semi-final whilst Susie and Rex beat Malcolm Hartley and Judith Bish (Thirsk) in the other. Each semi-final was 15 ends with the final being 18 ends.

2021

In 2021, 22 couples played in the tournament with two Bishop Monkton bowlers  - Pete Darbyshire & Dave Chapman - winning the final. They were presented with their trophies by Peter Gordon, Chair of the Bateson League.

2019

Pete Darbyshire and Gordon Ibbottson, entering the competition for the first time, were runners-up.

2018

Pauline Beecroft and Basil Birchall were back in the final becoming runners-up again.

2017

Bishop Monkton players win for the third time. Having won the title 2 years ago,  John Kerr was back but this time partnering Keith Alderson.

2015

The 2015 finalists were two teams from our club - Basil Birchall & Pauline Beecroft v Bill Humphreys & John Kerr.

The game went right to the wire with a score of 18 shots each after 18 ends. Bill and John finally clinched it on the extra end!

2011
